DeltaWare's Medigent Team Demonstrates at International HL7 Working Group Meetings
Friday, January 18, 2008

Charlottetown, PE – With an opportunity to continue to expose DeltaWare internationally in the healthcare IT world, some of the DeltaWare team took part in the regular HL7 Working Group meetings taking place this week in San Antonio, Texas.

Peter Lawlor and Matthew Wicks from the DeltaWare Medigent team were attending these sessions and had the opportunity to present an implementation case study on the Medigent Drug Information System (DIS) project in Prince Edward Island and presented details of the HL7 v3 Test Harness used in conformance testing.  “This was a unique opportunity for our team to exhibit our capabilities to healthcare groups from all over the world,” explains Peter Lawlor. “Not only are we continuing to demonstrate our work to the industry, but in this setting, we were able to share the lessons we have learned during our HL7 implementations with those who are just in the process of planning their implementation efforts.”

The Medigent DIS was designed by DeltaWare in accordance with Canada Health Infoway’s Generation 3 DIS guidelines and is the first of its kind in Canada due to the adoption of the new Pan-Canadian messaging standards based on HL7 v3.  The PEI deployment of the Medigent DIS represents the first time that these standards have been employed for the exchange of medication-related information, offering potential for Canada-wide integration and operability, the ultimate goal of the Canada Health Infoway.

The HL7 v3 Test Harness, developed by DeltaWare and released to the public through an open source license, is currently being used by the provinces of Prince Edward Island, Saskatchewan, and Alberta to test the conformance of retail pharmacy point-of-sale vendor products to these new pan-Canadian HL7 v3 messaging specifications.

HL7 Working Group Meetings are held three times per year giving special interest groups an opportunity to meet face-to-face to work on standards development and provide resources for the healthcare IT community.
