DeltaWare 5k Fun Run a Success Again
Monday, July 14, 2008

The fifth annual DeltaWare Systems Inc. 5K Fun Run and 3K Walk took place Saturday, June 21st at the Atlantic Technology Centre.  More than 180 runners and walkers participated in the Fun Run this year, marking the largest number of participants yet and raising more than $1,350 for Island Hospice, this year’s chosen charity.  This well-known community event is open to all ages, and both casual and avid runners and walkers.

This year’s recipient of the Fun Run proceeds, the Hospice Palliative Care Association of PEI, is a non-profit organization dedicated to providing care and support to persons living with or dying from a life threatening illness, and to those who are bereaved.

Hospice volunteers provide emotional support, sitting with the patient throughout the night or during the day when family members must work, doing small jobs around the house, writing letters, assisting with final plans, driving to appointments, etc.  Basically, volunteers assist with small things essential to patient comfort, and tasks that are outside both the formal Health system and the family’s ability to provide.  They also provide support to family members during and after the illness.  Volunteers are present when needed and through the bereavement support and ‘aftercare’ program.  Hospice volunteers may also continue to have a relationship after patient support is no longer required.  Hospice services are provided free of charge and the organization receives no government funding.  Funds raised through donations, memorials and fundraising activities are used to support formal training, education, advocacy programs, and workshops.

The event is organized by the staff of DeltaWare, which prides itself on promoting a healthy lifestyle and participation in recreational activities, while at the same time giving back to the community. The organizing committee extends thanks to the numerous volunteers and local businesses that donated prizes and services, and the assistance of the PEI Roadrunners club.
